Distinction between Wealth and Power in Aladdin
In Erin Addison's essay, "Saving Other Women from Other Men: Disney's Aladdin," she notes an interesting distinction between wealth and power. While these two objects are often viewed almost synonymously, I found it thought-provoking to look at how they are portrayed very differently in Aladdin. In the movie, we see how Aladdin's goal to obtain wealth is viewed as a positive. On the other hand, the audience can see how Jafar's desire to gain power is seen negatively. Disney's decision to depict these often interchangeable terms in very different lights is intriguing. Perhaps since Disney is based in America, the center of capitalism, Disney wants to show the ambition for wealth to be a positive thing. Conversely, they may want to illustrate how the craving for power is a negative thing in order to warn us about the dangers of power-hungry individuals. Regardless of their motives, I found it compelling to examine the connotations Disney associated with wealth and power.
